The frames are adapted from factory-new materials, and the protruding edge is nailed into place with at least one metal nail. The protruding edge is not perfectly flat or smooth, and the ends may bow slightly off the surface. The entire edge protrudes on one side by approximately 7/16" (and on the other side by approximately 2/16"). This protruding edge acts as a guide for the bees and increases the likelihood they will build the new honeycomb in a convenient straight line right on that edge. The wood is uncoated.
