He fought against the United States government to protect Native American territory and the Lakota people’s traditional way of life. Crazy Horse was born near Rapid City, South Dakota, and was named “Curly” as a child. He was later renamed “Horse On Sight” after showing bravery in a battle with the Arapahos, and his father passed on his name to him in honor. Crazy Horse was killed by a soldier at Fort Robinson, Nebraska, on September 5, 1877.
