Description: BENJAMIN 16" VAPOR PROOF LIGHTS100 AVAILABLESOLD INDIVIDUALLY Copper Collar New Hi-Temperature Gasket Representative edge chips shown below. Notice the Bulb in the Center of the Globe. This is made possible by a machined socket extension, explanation in the description. A Very important feature. BELOW ARE PAGES FROM A 1941 BENJAMIN LIGHTING CATALOG 100 available, work in progress, sold individually. Everybody's favorite..classic 16 inch diameter Benjamin Lights with a globe.Vapor-proof lights were designed to prevent the combustion of gases or small particles of air-borne dust in industrial settings. Dust clouds from handling and processing many organic and inorganic substances explode with great violence when ignited. Such explosions are destructive and usually result in disastrous fires. Grain, flour, sugar and starch are examples in the food industry while coal, wood and sulfur are examples of explosive particles in the manufacturing sector. These lights were retrieved from a long-closed military munitions depot. The installation was built just prior to WWII. Closed many years ago, these lights have been waiting patiently to be revived and put back into use. I promise to rescue as many as I possibly can. This listing is comprised of lights that are in very good condition, but not perfect by any means. Most, if not all, have roughness on the lower rim. Chips and corrosion formed where droplets of water and condensation gathered over the last 75 years. None of this is very distracting at all, and I've done a good job cleaning it up and neutralizing the advancement of corrosion. All this to say...they've been around a while and didn't survive unscathed. If you'd like your Old Industrial Lighting to be perfect...these are not for you. If you'd prefer they look like they've served their time in industrial environment during the war effort...these are indeed for you. These lights are from the Rosie Riveter era. Many women labored in the munitions plant while their husbands were away serving their country. Thank you Ladies. The sockets were simply cleaned, inspected and re-wired. They are a standard medium base socket and utilize standard medium base household bulbs. The lights are rated for up to 200 watts. I added a 2" solid aluminum socket extension and ground wire. The purpose of this is two-fold. First of all, it brings the bulb down close to the center of the globe, just the way Mr. Benjamin intended it to be. This allows more light in the proper area of the reflector, which in turn creates more light with less wattage. Today's bulbs are far shorter than the bulbs from days-gone-by. LED bulbs are especially short and well accommodated with this system. Secondly, it allows me to add a ground wire to the fixture. This is especially important if your lights will be required to pass an inspection....safety first! Also, I can substitute the original Benjamin socket with a brand-new UL Listed socket....fly through your inspections!! Add $25 ea.The shades are 16 inches in diameter. Overall, from the glass bottom to the top of the hanger is inches. The vintage down-rod is 6 inches long, I can replace the 6" down-rods with 3, or 12" rods free of charge, although the replacement down-rods may not be vintage. Either black or galvanized pipe is available. While these lights were manufactured to be vapor-proof or otherwise to be used in hazardous locations, they should no longer be considered as such. Changes in both the old fixture and current lighting standards will likely make these lights fall short of performing safely in hazardous locations. Their new intended purpose is to light an area in a non-hazardous location while looking awesome.......and they will do that very, very well The lights will be partially disassembled for safe packing and transport. They are easily reassembled. I've included many pictures of these lights as I know they they represent a substantial purchase. I'd like the buyer to have a good sense of what they are purchasing. Please don't email your phone number prior to any purchase. Ebay will block your complete email and possibly suspend both of us. Please feel free to ask questions prior to bidding. I'm a very fast and careful shipper. These lights will be packed very well.CLICK HERE TO SEE MY OTHER AUCTIONS Thank you for viewing this listing in its entirety.
