Description: Offered is this lot of 11 antique volumes of "Great Men and Famous Women", published in New York by Selmar Hess, with an 1894 copyright date. These soft cover magazine-like volumes are "a series of pen and pencil sketches of the lives of more than 200 of the most prominent personages in history". There are 68 volumes in the complete series. There are many full-page high-quality black and white illustrations, with wide borders, suitable for framing (some on heavy stock paper), as well as some smaller images. Text accompanies some of the images, but the articles continue from one volume to the next, sometimes ending in mid-sentence, so articles may not be complete unless consecutive issues are present. There seems to be no particular order to the subjects, who range from ancient to modern Europeans to Americans of both the 18th and 19th centuries. Included are volumes 29, 30, 31, 32, 41, 42, 49, 50, 55, 67 & 68. Each volume is approx. 12 1/4" x 9 3/4". There are 20 or so numbered pages of text in each volume, exclusive of the illustration pages, numbered consecutively from previous volumes. They are in fair to good condition. The covers are mostly intact, with some edge wear, discoloration, etc. Most of the covers are fairly well-attached to the pages, but a few are loose. All or nearly all of the pages are present and intact, but there may be the occasional missing page. Most of the pages have some edge wear but there may be an occasional page with a longer tear. Some of the illustrations are still accompanied by their original tissue paper.
