Spinel is an awesome natural stone, very hard and durable. Spinel unfairly kind of gets a bad rap because it is very inexpensively synthesized, and class ring stones were often referred to as "synthetic spinel" or just "spinel". Spinels come in a wide range of colors and historically have often been found in parcels of rubies and sapphires. This is the kind of stone that resembles a purplish pink sapphire in kind of a bright plum color. It is eye clean with a little shallower cut. The good news about a shallow cut is that you are buying the gem at a per carat price, and this gives you a bigger look at a lower cost The bad news about a shallower stone is that they can "window"; light can leak out the bottom of the stone and allow the viewer to see through it (like a window). This gemstone does "window" some. But this gem is still very pleasing; and to a Gemologist like me looks like a more expensive, 1 3/4 carat gem! Spinels are rarer than sapphires but generally less expensive because they are not widely known by consumers. Did I mention that this is one for the discerning connoisseur?!!! The diamonds have an actual combined weight of 0.18 carat. They are flush set in the white gold infinity design portion of the ring plus two bezel set accent diamonds. These diamonds have an average color graded at I/J and average clarity of SI-2 with good overall cut. The spinel and the diamonds are all 100% genuine, natural, untreated, and unenhanced. The mounting is by the well-respected (and much loved within the trade) New York manufacturer Interings, style number JSR1511. The main body of the ring is rose gold and the infinity shaped accents are in white gold. It is a true two-tone, not just rhodium plated white areas; it is much more expensive to create a ring this way because it requires assembling multiple castings. I don't know if it was manufactured in New York or if it was imported; they do both. The ring is currently finger size 6.5 but is easily sizable by any competent jeweler. It weighs a very hefty 5.2 grams. This ring is solid gold and unworn; don't be duped into buying a cheap gold-plated ring or someone else's worn-out castoff! This ring was originally priced at $1,695 in our brick and mortar fine jewelry store that closed in 2020.
