Description: Here is a simple ladies ring featuring a pear shape natural ruby accented by a genuine, natural diamond. First a note on rubies. As a Graduate Gemologist, I can say that identification of a natural ruby versus a high-quality created ruby is one of the more difficult identifications a gemologist routinely makes. Identification of inexpensive flame fusion synthetic rubies is one of the easiest identifications we make. Still, I was told by a GIA instructor a few years ago that the most common synthetic gemstone that is submitted for identification to the Gemological Institute of America's lab by jewelers is a flame fusion synthetic ruby! Further, the trade assumes that all natural rubies are heat treated unless they are accompanied by a lab certificate or seller guarantee that they are untreated. A biproduct of this heat treatment is that flux from the process fills surface breaking flaws and improves clarity; the trade accepts this as long as the effects are minor. To further complicate matters, there are ruby-glass composite stones where major parts of a natural ruby are glass filled; the trade considers these to be simulated rubies. There are many honest sellers on eBay, but there are also many who misrepresent their gems; either out of dishonesty or out of ignorance (and many of these sellers have good feedback ratings). Caveat emptor (buyer beware)! This particular natural ruby measures 7.6 x 5.7 mm with an actual weight of 1.23 carats. The ruby exhibits a strongly purplish red color with fair to good clarity and is of good overall cut. The stone is very pleasing, but has a slightly hazy quality rather than crisp clarity due to a number of internal inclusions. Still, top gem quality natural rubies of this size sell for close to $10,000 wholesale; so, when I could acquire a nice-looking natural ruby like this that we could set in a ring and sell for under $1,300, I always jumped at the opportunity! Ruby is July's birthstone, but this ring is a joy to own and wear regardless of your birth month! The ruby is accented by a round, full brilliant cut, natural and unenhanced diamond measuring 1.7 mm in diameter and weighing 0.02 carat. This diamond adds a nice little sparkle and helps to bring out the wonderful color of the ruby. The diamond is graded at G/H color and SI-2 clarity with very good overall cut. The mounting is style number 7301 by the premium manufacturer Stuller Settings, based in Lafayette, Louisiana. It is done in solid 14 karat yellow gold. The ring is currently in a finger size 6 but is easily sizable by any competent jeweler. The ring is a lightweight design with little to detract from the ruby and diamond; it weighs 2.2 grams.
