As a Graduate Gemologist, I can say that identification of a natural ruby versus a high-quality created ruby is one of the more difficult identifications a gemologist routinely makes. Identification of inexpensive flame fusion synthetic rubies is one of the easiest identifications we make. Still, the most common synthetic gemstone that is submitted for identification to the Gemological Institute of America's lab by jewelers is a flame fusion synthetic ruby! Further, the trade assumes that all natural rubies are heat treated unless they are accompanied by a lab certificate or seller guarantee that they are untreated. A biproduct of this heat treatment is that flux from the process fills surface breaking flaws and improves clarity; the trade accepts this as long as the effects are minor. To further complicate matters, there are ruby-glass composite stones where major parts of a natural ruby are glass filled; the trade considers these to be simulated rubies. There are many honest sellers on eBay, but there are also many who misrepresent their gems; either out of dishonesty or out of ignorance (and many of these sellers have good feedback ratings). Don't depend on eBay to police these sellers; they don't have the manpower or the expertise. Caveat emptor (buyer beware)! This particular natural ruby is a medium dark, moderately strong, strongly purplish red color with fair clarity and is of good overall cut. It has been heat treated in the typical way with some flux healing. The stone is pleasing, but the internal flaws give it more of a translucent quality to it than crisp, clear transparency. It measures 6.9 x 5.1 mm with an actual weight of 1.28 carat. Ruby is July's birthstone, but this ring is a joy to own and wear regardless of your birth month! The ruby is flanked by two round, single cut, natural and unenhanced diamonds. "Single cut" means that each diamond has 17 flat faceted surfaces rather than the 58 in a full brilliant cut. This is a common cutting style for small diamonds. The diamonds measure 1.5 mm in diameter with an actual combined weight of 0.03 carat. These diamonds provide a nice little sparkle and help to bring out the color of the ruby. They are graded at I/J color and SI-1 clarity with good overall cut. The ruby and the diamonds are 100% genuine, natural, earth mined gems, and the diamonds are also untreated and unenhanced. The mounting is by the well-respected New York manufacturer Overnight Mountings, style 80082, and is fashioned in 14 karat solid white gold. The ring is currently in a finger size 6.75 but is easily sizable by any competent jeweler. The ring weighs 2.3 grams.
