Description: THE WORKS OF KING JAMES First Edition, First Issue London, 1616 [JAMES I, King of England (1566-1625)] The Workes of the Most High and Mightie Prince, James by the Grace of God, King of Great Britaine, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, etc. London: Printed by Robert Barker and John Bill, 1616. Folio (App. 13.25 x 8.75 in). First edition, first issue of the complete collected works of King James I (famed for his role in commissioning the translation of what became known as the King James Bible of 1611). The text includes his works on witchcraft, demonology, prophecy, the divine right of kings, biblical theology, tobacco, "the powder treason" (the first act of modern terrorism), and various speeches delivered in his capacity as an absolute monarch. Illustrated with an engraved portrait of James enthroned (by John Bill after Simon Pass), on verso of half-title, first state engraved title-page (by Renold Elstrack), full-page wood-cut Royal Coat of Arms, small engraved vignette portrait of Prince Charles by Pass, together with numerous wood-cut initials. Full English calf binding, rebacked with five raised bands and gilt to spine. A handsome and scarce first edition of the collected works of English King James I; a volume "of great interest to the students of the development of the idea of the divine right of kings and other Stuart constitutional problems." (Pforzheimer) An important work, prized for Simon Pass's engraved portrait of an enthroned James and Elstrack's elaborately engraved architectural title-page, while typographically it is "considered...one of the finest specimens of Jacobean book-production." (Pforzheimer). With the bookplate of Dr. & Mrs. H. R. Knohl from the Fox Pointe Collection. A well preserved copy of an extremely important text. _____________________________________ Items listed on eBay are merely representative of our broader inventory.
