Although the contents of this speech had previously been published this is the first edition of the speech on its own, under this title. In 1643 there was a different work titled 'A Speech made by Alderman Garroway... with a letter from a Scholler in Oxfordshire'. ESTC No. R224613. The author of this work, Sir Henry Garraway, was an English merchant who was Lord Mayor of London in 1639. He was elected as an alderman in 1627 for the City of London for Vintry ward. He was the alderman of Broad Street ward when this speech was given. Garraway made this speech during the 1642 mayoral elections. The people of London were slowly turning against the King and therefore it did not seem that Garraway would be re-elected in his role. This speech was given by Garraway at a common-hall on the 17th January 1642, in response to a speech delivered by parliamentarian John Pym on the 13th Jan. Garraway defended the King and combated Pym's previous points with this passionate, clever rebuttal. Despite this great speech, which was published into several editions, the parliamentary cause won the people of London over and Garraway was dismissed. CONDITION Disbound. A few small chips to the extremities. Pages are slightly age toned. Closely cropped to the bottom margin with the catchword slightly obscured. Just the odd spot to pages.
