According to a note in pencil of the back, this example comes from the 1695 edition.SIZE: The printed area is approximately 29 x 36.5 cm (11.5 x 14.25 inches), plus good margins with a centre fold as issued.ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Robert Morden. Robert Morden (c. 1650 – 1703) was an English bookseller, publisher, and maker of maps and globes. He was among the first successful commercial map makers. Between about 1675 and his death in 1703, he was based under the sign of the Atlas at premises in Cornhill and New Cheapside, London. His cartographical output was large and varied. His best-known maps are those of South Wales, North Wales and the English Counties first published in a new edition of Camden's "Britannia" in 1695, and subsequently reissued in 1722, 1753 and 1772. These maps were based on new information from gentlemen of each county, and were newly engraved. Each had a decorated cartouche, and showed numerous place names. Morden also produced in 1701 a series of smaller county maps often known as Miniature Mordens. PROVENANCE: Produced for the 1695 edition of William Camden’s “Britannia”, when they were first published these county maps were advertised as being “much the fairest and most correct of any that have yet appear’d”. Decorative title cartouche and scale bars. From the 1695 edition of Camden's Britannia & was the first edition to contain Robert Morden's beautiful county maps. Morden went to considerable trouble to make them as accurate as possible, and they were the first county maps to include roads. TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on laid paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Very good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase.
