Printed for Jacob Tonson, London, 1697, eighteen engraved plates, 501 pp plus table, full original double ruled paneled mottled leather, 8 x 5.25”, 8vo. In good condition. Moderate scuffing to edges with heavy wear and red rot to top right corner of front board. 1” area of loss at top edge of front board. Slight abrasions to surface of leather. Gilt has been rubbed away from ruling along boards. Beautifully tooled at center compartments with tulip flourishes. Joints worn with red rot and minor loss. Spine worn with minor loss of gilt stamping. Cord lacking at head with loosening cord at tail. Slight loss at ends. Spine abraded overall. Armorial bookplate of Richard Brinsley Sheridan on pastedown. Brinsley has signed the top edge of the pastedown as well. An old hand signature, likely the original owner, on the fly dated 12.10.1696 (this was printed in 1697). Old hand inscription at right hand corner of fly. Small ink splatter at fore-edge, slightly affecting the margins in the first signature. All edges speckled. Lacking title page. Internally good with light toning and minor instances of foxing. A few instances of old hand marginalia. Slight offsetting from plates. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. 1st edition. The Satires of Juvenal with important provenance of Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) an Irish satirist, politician, playwright, poet and long-term owner of the London Royal Theatre. He is known for his plays such as The Rivals, The School for Scandal, The Duenna, and a Trip to Scarborough. He was also a Whig MP for the British House of Commons for Stafford (1780-1806), Westminster (1806-07) and Ilchester (1807-1812). He is buried at Poet’s Corner in Westminster Abbey. RAREB1697DRTL
