DATE PRINTED: 1756 SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 37.5 x 20 cm, 14.75 x 8 inches (large) plus margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Benjamin Cole (1697-1783). Cole was an engraver of architectural subjects and others, including many trade cards. Official engraver to the Grand Lodge of Freemasons. PROVENANCE: A plate published in William Maitlands "History of London", published in London, 1756. Originally published in 1739 as "The history of London, from its foundation by the Romans.", Maitland's History was reissued in 1756 and it is in this edition that the illustrations were much embellished and improved. TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on laid paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Very good. Suitable for framing. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Shoreditch is a district in the East End of London, which is divided between the London boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets. It is part of the traditional county of Middlesex, but for administrative purposes became part of the County of London following the passing of the Local Government Act 1888, and part of Greater London in 1965. Shoreditch Church (dedicated to St Leonard) is of ancient origin.
