Additional Information By the time of this distinctive map's publication in 1757, the need for an updated, accurate map of the colonies of Virginia and Maryland had become a necessity, and acting Governor Lewis Burwell was tasked with appointing the best surveyors in the region to complete this piece for the Board of Trade and Plantations in London. Burwell then appointed Albermarle County surveyor Joshua Fry and his deputy surveyor Peter Jefferson to create this work. The pair had already surveyed many of these areas. Given the cartographical technology available then, they were the best equipped to undertake a task of such a large scale and importance. This map would remain the preeminent illustration used for the states throughout the eighteenth century and bears a distinctive aesthetic and unique style that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible link between the past and present, offering a glimpse into pre-revolutionary Virginia and Maryland, and illustrating the growth and development of the states during the following centuries. The two states were essential parts of the lead-up to the American Revolution. They were home to the first five presidents of the United States, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. The Colonial Period in Virginia and Maryland was a transformative time. It marked a time of considerable growth across the region as vast agricultural interests were established, attracting residents from across Western Europe. These settlers established communities and cities that continue to shape the region's culture to this day, a testament to the lasting impact of this period.
