1775 High Sheriff JP 3 vellum Documents inc anti Catholic Oath of Allegiance

Description: Vellum documents relating to the High Sheriff of Staffordshire. Dated 12 September in the 15th year of the reign of George 3rd (dating it to 1775). The documents relate to Clement Kynnersley. Internet research indicates that he was appointed to the position of High Sheriff in 1769 so the dates do not make complete sense. There are three documents so it is easier to describe them individually. Doc 1. Measures 10 inches by 5½ inches. Dated 12 September in the 15th year of the reign of George 3rd (dating it to 1775). This document is incomplete. The right edge is missing though a lot of the details remain. There is a hand written addition of the reverse noting that this is the appointment of Kynnersley to the position of High Sheriff. This addition is later and I think it is incorrect. Looking at the other documents I think this is actually appointing Kynnersley as Justice of the Peace. Doc 2. Measures 14½ inches by 4½ inches. This document directs Justices of the Peace on how to fulfil their role - eg “equal right to the poor and to the rich…..You shall not be of Council with any person in any quarrel hanging before you….without any concealment of imbezilling.” Doc 3. Measures 14 inches by 2½ inches. This is an Oath of Allegiance. Contents include “I do swear that I from my heart abhor detest and abjure as Impious and heretical that Damnable Doctrine ….by the Pope or the See of Rome may be deposed.” I think this oath relates to Kynnersley’s Catholic faith. The oath swears allegiance to the King above any ecclesiastical jurisdiction. CONDITION. As mentioned, the document of appointment is incomplete. Old fold lines. The two smaller documents are complete and in good condition - though the Oath has a natural hole that does not affect the contents. Please see my other listings for similar documents
