Description: I have here for sale a genuine eighteenth century antique publication containing four letters: LETTER TO THE COURT OF DIRECTORS BY LORD PIGOT, dated 15th October 1776 to the Honourable the Court of Directors for Affairs of the Honourable the United Company of Merchants of England, trading to the East Indies (10 pages); COPY OF A LETTER FROM LORD PIGOT TO SIR EDWARD HUGHES dated 14th Oct 1776, to Sir Edward Hughes, Commodore and Commander in Chief of his Majesty's Ships in India (3 pages); EXTRACT OF A LETTER FROM FORT ST GEORGE, dated 4th July 1775, referred to in Lord Pigot's Letter of 15th October 1776 (7 pages); and EXTRACT OF THE COMPANY'S GENERAL LETTER TO FORT ST GEORGE, dated 25th November 1775 (2 pages)Pigot entered the service of the East India Company in 1736, at the age of 17; after nineteen years he became governor and commander-in-chief of Madras in 1755. He returned to England in 1763 after defending Madras against the French. He then returned to India in 1775 to reoccupy his former position at Madras, but Pigot was at once involved in a fierce quarrel with the majority of his council which arose out of the proposed restoration of Thuljaji, the Rajah of Tanjore. The governor was arrested by order of his opponents and was still a prisoner when he died. Meanwhile, the conduct of Pigot was censured by the court of directors in Great Britain, and the order for his restoration was followed immediately by another for his recall. This happened about a month after his death, but before the news had reached Great Britain. In 1779 the matter was discussed in Parliament, and four of those who were responsible for his arrest were tried and were fined £1000 each. 22 pages long. 25 x 19 cm. No covers, Very good condition.
