Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) scarce antique print "Irish Gratitude." and on the other side "The Jubilee." 'Irish Gratitude' contains caricature portraits of specific individuals and social types, but it is more of a symbolic commemoration of the occasion (May 30th, 1782) when the members of the Irish Parliament voted to grant Henry Grattan the sum of £100,000 for his efforts in gaining his countrymen legislative independence from Britain. Henry Grattan stands (centre) in profile to the right facing a deputation of Irish notables who are making the presentation of the money voted to him in the Irish Parliament for his services in securing Irish independence. At the head of the deputation is a short man, the Irish Speaker, E. S. Pery, in his Speaker's wig and robes. He holds out a paper inscribed, "Grant of the Sum of £100000 to H. Grattan Esqr" and saying, "To you Sr as the deliverer of our Country & the establisher of our Peace; the Senate & People of Ireland dedicate this Small token of their Gratitude". Behind the Speaker are two men, arm-in-arm, both wearing ribbons, others crowd behind them. 'The Jubilee' [August 1782] is a sequel to Dame Rat and Her Poor Little Ones which had appeared in late March. In that print Francis Seymour-Conway (Lord Hertford) had lost his job as Lord Chamberlain and his wife and family (Dame Rat and her little ones) were busily attempting (without success) to curry favor with the new Foreign Secretary, Charles James Fox. A fox (C. Fox) hangs from a gibbet, the Conway family, as rats, dance triumphantly round him holding hands, the leader, General Conway, blindfolded and led by the nose by Shelburne. Shelburne (right) has two faces, his own looks smiling towards Conway (not a rat), saying, "Huzza! my friends – huzza - the Monster's dead, and we Full-merrily will dance, around his fatal Tree Honours thick falling, shall our steps attend, Come where I lead - to Glory we'll ascend.". (ref: British Museum). DATE PRINTED: 1849 from plates first published in 1782.SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 35 x 26 cm (13.75 x 10.25 inches) plus margins with a blank back (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn and etched by James Gillray. James Gillray (13 August 1756 – 1 June 1815) was a British caricaturist and printmaker famous for his etched political and social satires, mainly published between 1792 and 1810. Many of his works are held at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Gillray has been called "the father of the political cartoon", with his works satirizing George III, Napoleon, prime ministers and generals. Regarded as being one of the two most influential cartoonists, the other being William Hogarth, Gillray's wit and humour, knowledge of life, fertility of resource, keen sense of the ludicrous, and beauty of execution, at once gave him the first place among caricaturists. In his caricatures Gillray was attacking the social follies of the time with scathing satire, and nothing escapes his notice. He is honourably distinguished in the history of caricature by the fact that his sketches are real works of art. PROVENANCE: In 1849/1851 Henry George Bohn put out an edition, from the original plates in a handsome elephant folio from where this example is taken, the coarser sketches-commonly known as the "Suppressed Plates"-being published in a separate volume.VERSO: There is another view printed on the reverse side.
