Complete with half titles. In six volumes. A history of the Council of Trent, held between 1545 and 1563, prompted by the spreading of the Protestant Reformation which resulted in the Counter-Reformation. Originally published in two volumes in 1656-7 and followed by numerous further editions.A harsh and well researched rebuttal to Paolo Sarpi's 'Istoria del Concilio Tridentino,' often criticised for as inaccurate and polemical in its emphasis on the role of the Papal Curia, and its slant on the Curia hostile. Pallavicino's 'History' exposed Sarpi's bias and inaccuracy and marked an advance in the collection and use of original documents.Written by Father Sforza Pallavicino and featuring notes by Francescantonio Zaccaria. With a lengthy introduction to vol. I. Vol. VI contains indices.Cardinal Francesco Maria Sforza Pallavicino was an Italian cardinal and philosopher, author of several highly influential philosophical and theological treatises. The present is his most well-known work, which remained authoritative until the nineteenth century.
