ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by H. Pelham and engraved by Walker. Henry Pelham (February 14, 1748/49 – 1806), American painter, engraver, and cartographer, was born in Boston, where his father, Peter Pelham, limner, engraver, and schoolmaster, had married Mary (Singleton) Copley, widow of Richard Copley and mother of John Singleton Copley. Pelham left Boston with other Loyalists in August 1776. Having arrived in London, where the Copleys were settled, he supported himself by teaching drawing, perspective, geography, and astronomy. Having married Catherine Butler, daughter of William Butler of Castle Crine, County Clare, Ireland, Pelham went to Ireland. Published by Mary Hooper, Ludgate Hill, London. Samuel Hooper was Francis Grose's close friend and publisher. He died in 1791 and this work was published by his widow, Mary. PROVENANCE: This print was published in "The Antiquities of Ireland", by Francis Grose. Francis Grose (1731–1791) was an antiquary and lexicographer, of Swiss extraction. He published Antiquities of England and Wales (1773–87), which was well received, and thereafter, in 1789, set out on an antiquarian tour through Scotland, the fruit of which was Antiquity of Scotland (1789–91). He afterwards undertook a similar expedition to Ireland, but died suddenly at Dublin. His nephew Daniel and a Dr. Edward Ledwich, who had already published a book on Irish antiquities, completed the work shortly afterwards.TYPE: Antique copper block engraving printed on paper. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Ennis Friary (colloquially also known as Ennis Abbey) was a Franciscan friary in the town of Ennis, County Clare, Ireland. It was established in the middle of the 13th century by the ruling O'Brien dynasty who supported it for most of its existence. Following the suppression of the monasteries in the 16th century, the friary continued to function for a while despite the loss of its lands. In the early 17th century, the buildings were handed over to the Church of Ireland as a place of worship. It was used as such until the late 19th century. After the construction of a new Church of Ireland building, the friary fell into ruin. Managed by the Office of Public Works since the late 19th century, it was formally returned to the Franciscan Order in 1969. Please explore my ebay shop for more antique prints.
