1796 Handwritten Student Legal Treatise Book Case Ref. William Reynolds England

Description: 1796 Handwritten Student Legal Treatise - Book - Case Reference - William Reynolds - England. Signed ownership: William Reynolds and dated with the signature: July 25th, 1796. In good condition, especially for the age. A couple loose pages. Some wear on top of spine and some corner bumping. Overall yellowing. Scuffs and staining on covers. Further details: (1): While we have no direct reference to know whether the book is from England or America, it is my personal belief that the evidence leans toward England as some of the pages reference Fitzg. and Bun. which are British legal references. Handwriting Style: The script is formal and characteristic of legal documents from the 18th century, which could be found in both England and the American colonies, but the legal citations suggest a stronger connection to England. Other references also support that case: Both "Bac. Abr." and "Ray" are English references, not American colonial ones. "Bac. Abr." stands for Bacon's Abridgment, an influential legal reference book authored by Sir Matthew Bacon, a British lawyer, and judge. It was widely used in England to summarize legal principles and case law. \ "Ray" refers to Sir Thomas Raymond's Reports, which are case law reports from English courts. (2): Given the handwritten nature of the content, combined with detailed references to legal cases and principles, it's quite possible that this was written by a student or someone studying law. The structured format, referencing major legal texts and reports like "Bac. Abr." and "Ray.," suggests it was likely a personal reference book or study aid, a common practice among legal students or clerks in the 18th century to organize their notes and important legal principles. \ (3) The book is around 400 sheets of paper with 363 entries and about half of those are filled in. Each entry spans from the back of a page and the front of the other so in the modern way of counting it would be around 800 pages. (4): From the text, this appears to be a legal treatise or case reference rather than a dictionary. The handwriting references specific legal cases, statutes, and legal authorities like "2 Stra." and "Fitzg.," which are typical of case law citations or a compilation of legal precedents rather than definitions of legal terms, which would be expected in a dictionary. The focus on precedent and legal reasoning points to it being more of a case reference or treatise for legal study. Please inquire with further questions prior to purchase.
