Description: Herman’s Christian Paulsen describes the customs of the Orient in two books, one, “from the Kings” while the other is “from Royal servants”. Paulsen collected travel reports from authors that he considered reputable and compared their work with passages from the Bible. In very good condition, the volume has gray marbled papers over publisher’s boards with a black paper spine with a gray label having gilt lettering. Frontispiece shows three farm scenes with elaborate border of leaves and vines; the text is dedicated to the Christian VII of Denmark and Norway (book one) while the other is dedicated to Friedrich, his brother. Inside are decorated capitals, wonderful elaborate flourishes, a “Pflug der Indianer” (Indian plow), a foldout of some type of royal presentation, and two other illustrations, one showing coins. In very good condition, there is foxing and spots due to age. Very nice copy of an interesting text on travels in the East with interesting illustrations, great decorated chapters and capitals as well as a great gothic font. Email with questions.
