Description: I have here for sale a book entitled TRAVELS IN UPPER AND LOWER EGYPT undertaken by Order of the Old Government of France by C S Sonnini, Vol III only. It was published in 1799 by John Stockdale, London. Translated from the French by Henry Hunter. This third volume has 9 b/w plates and a large fold-out map of the country. French naturalist Charles-Nicolas-Sigisbert Sonnini de Manoncourt (1751 - 1812) had travelled to Egypt with Baron de Tott's expedition in 1777 in search of rare birds, but gave priority to a command from Louis XVI for him to explore the country. The present work was the result of three years' exploration, and contains information and commentary on many subjects, including medicine, food, agriculture, sexual customs, religious sects, architecture and natural history. The French edition was published in 1799, as was an alternative English translation by Henry Hunter. Half brown leather on blue/brown marbled hardboards. 5 gilt bands, a dark red leather title block and gilt lettering to the spine. Boards in very good condition. A couple of inscriptions to the front endpaper. Some light foxing to the pages. 324 pages, 22 x 14 cm. Postage will be by Air Mail outside of UK.
