Published: John Russell and John West, Boston, 1800.1st printing. Hardcover in full calf leather binding w/ black leather spine label, 5.25x8.25”, 208 pp + 14 pp Subscribers list [all from Massachusetts], previous owner name “Alfred Macy 1861” title page [book donated to Needham, MA library by descendants of the Macy department store family], date of March 10th. 1800 front paste down w/ paper label removed, large chip on ffep likely related to previous owner name, and “March 10, 1800 cost 7/6 $1.25” on rear paste down, VG.Alfred Macy (1831-1874) was an 8th generation direct descendant of Thomas Macy (b.1769) who was the first white man on Nantucket Island and one of ten men who purchased the island from the Indians. The Macys were Quakers. Alfred was a cousin to Rowland H. Macy (1822-1877), the founder of the R.H. Macy Co in 1858. Both were born on Nantucket and great-grandsons of Caleb Macy. Alfred lived his entire life on Nantucket and was a lawyer, sometimes judge, Head of the Coffin School, presidential elector in 1860, and a Member of the Massachusetts Governor's Council until it was abolished in 1872.
