The Macys were Quakers. Alfred was a cousin to Rowland H. Macy (1822-1877), the founder of the R.H. Macy Co in 1858. Both were born on Nantucket and great-grandsons of Caleb Macy. Alfred lived his entire life on Nantucket and was a lawyer, sometimes judge, Head of the Coffin School, presidential elector in 1860, and a Member of the Massachusetts Governor's Council until it was abolished in 1872.
