Its flesh is edible and tasty." "NO. 2. ENGLISH: "The FORK FISH inhabits the Central and East Indian Seas and can be recognized by its armored body. Instead of scales, it has diamond-shaped plates that rise into a cutting edge in the middle and give the fish an octagonal shape. The head is a square bone that forms a flat fork at the front, from which it gets its name. He has little meat, and even this is hard and lean. It feeds on worms and seaweeds." "NO. 3. ENGLISH: "NO. 3. THE SEE-LEYER (TRIGLA LYRA): This fish is found in both the Mediterranean and British Seas, is about 15 inches long and has hard, lean flesh. If you catch it, it makes a whistling sound; That's why the English call him the piper." "NO. 4. ENGLISH: "NO. 4. THE POINTED SEA COCK (TRIGLA PUNCTATA): The SPOTTED SEA COCK lives in the Antilles and is one of the flying fish. Its back is red, the belly is flesh-colored, but the fins are blue and yellow, and have dark red spots, which gives it a beautiful appearance. It is about 12 inches long." "NO. 5. ENGLISH: "NO. 5. THE GLOBAL EYE (CYPRINUS MACROPHTHALMUS): This beautiful fish inhabits the sweet waters of China. The conical protruding eyes are its distinctive feature. Its bright red burning color and its beautifully shaped, half red and half white fin feathers give it a magnificent appearance. It is 15 inches long, and bears much resemblance in the middle to the Chinese golden carp." In 1790, Bertuch started his biggest book project ever. Issued in 12 volumes it contains short articles written at a child's level of understanding to 'spread the knowledge of the epochs out before children'. Bertuch assembled the books according to his educational philosophy: the emphasis should be on illustrations that were 'beautifully and correctly drawn', 'selected and engraved from the best originals', in order to give children accurate information, while the text should be kept concise. He also felt that it is possible to use even strange and rare phenomena to capture the child's attention and imagination. Therefore, the encyclopedia was illustrated throughout with vivid and detailed copperplate engravings, that were scientifically accurate and sophisticated in their composition and execution. It was originally published in German and French, the 'Bilderbuch zum Nutzen und Vergnügen der Jugend.' Friedrich's son Carl Bertuch supported his father's work and published in cooperation with him some fragments of the 'Picture Book for Children'. It became the first encyclopedic book about nature and earth worldwide.
