1800s Charles Dickens Christmas Carol Antique Rare Collectible Arundel Series

Description: A Christmas Carol is a novella by famous literary author Charles Dickens; it was written and published in early Victorian era Britain, a period when there was great nostalgia for old Christmas traditions married with the introduction of new customs, such as Christmas trees and greeting cards. Dickens' legendary yuletide tale was greatly influenced by the experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and numerous Christmas stories and fairy tales. A Christmas Carol has been praised with reviving the Christmas season as one of merriment and mirth in Britain and America after a gloomy era of Puritan sobriety. A Christmas Carol lives on as an iconic Christmas favorite, having never been out of print, and has been adapted time and again to film, stage, opera, etc. Beautifully preserved and decorated in an ornate gold and embossed hunter green cover with a stunning motif of a woman with bold typographic art on the book's spine, this antique original mid to late 1800s Charles Dickens' "Christmas Stories from Household Words and All the Year Round" features a swallow bird design on the front cover with the words "De Hirundine"; meaning a songbird of the swallow family. Wonderfully featuring Charles' Dickens' five beloved Christmas books "A Christmas Carol" (1843), "The Chimes" (1844), "The Cricket on the Hearth: A Fairy Tale of Home" (1845), "The Battle of Life: A Love Story" (1846), and "The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain" (1848), this collection of Dickens' Christmas stories was printed and published by New York publishers W.L. Allison Company. William L Allison (1832-1893) opened his publishing door in 1869 as the successor to T. O'Kane. Initially he used the W.L. Allison imprint; which is what is present on the title page of this Charles Dickens' "Christmas Stories from Household Words and All the Year Round" Arundel Series. Through my research, these antique books are very rare and hard to find. I have, however, discovered that other similar books do not contain a publication date; which is also a characteristic of this book as there is certainly no evidence of missing pages where a date would be present. Considering that in 1890 the Allison plates were purchased by the Lovell's who organized the United States Book Company, and that the Lovell's organization went broke soon after but by 1894 the Allison Company was up and running as the William L. Allison Company (publishing books until 1900), I am certain that this 19th century Charles Dickens' Christmas Stories Arundel Series was published between 1869 and 1890. Table of Contents: A Christmas Carol The Chimes The Cricket on the Hearth: A Fairy Tale of Home The Battle of Life: A Love Story The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain In good condition for its antique age, this 1800s Charles Dickens Christmas Stories book has a few light signs of expected wear. As seen in the images provided, the beautifully decorated hunter green hardback cover does show some light areas of edge wear and scattered patina common of book published in the 19th century. The cover is loosely bound to the sturdy bookblock of pages; the cover is completely detached at the inner hinge of the front cover and it may be completely detached at the back cover hinge but I don't want to open it enough in this area to find out and risk worsening the wear. On the first blank page of the book a signature is written in small print that reads "Mildred Hope". The interior book pages are beautifully sepia toned with age, and some of the pages have some light edge wear. I suggest delicately handling this fragile antique 19th century Christmas relic while reading or admiring it. There is also a faint and slightly wide spread water stain that appears to only be seen when the book is closed on the outside edges; as it doesn't seem to penetrate and affect any of the interior pages. I also suggest displaying this antique book flat; resting on its blank green back cover and exposing its ornate front cover, rather than displaying the book in an upright position because of the condition of the fragile book binding, as this position would put a downward weight on the interior bookblock of pages. 390 Pages Measurements: 5" x 7 1/4" and 1 1/2" thick
