Johnson, 6 x 3.75", 18mos (Vol. I is 5.5 x 3.75"). In poor condition. As is. Marbled boards are all extremely scuffed, worn at edges, and bumped at corners. Leather spines either completely lacking, or heavily chipped - bindings exposed. Heads and tails of spines collapsed/lacking. All hinges are very fragile and attached by cording only. Vols. II, III, & IV are signed on front fly-leaves: W.E. Shore. Text-blocks exhibit foxing, toning, and finger-soiling. Some pages are detached, but still included. A complete work. No known marginalia. Please see photos. John Aikin (1747-1822) was an English medical doctor and surgeon, who, later in life, devoted himself wholly to biography and periodical writing. In 1792, Aikin moved to London, where he practiced as a consulting physician. However, he concerned himself more with the advocacy of liberty of conscience than with his professional duties. In conjunction with his sister, Anna Laetitia Barbauld, he published this popular series, for elementary family reading. They were so popular, they were translated into every European language.
