Complete in four volumes, West's novel is a historical morality tale based upon the life of Alice de Lacy, a fourteenth century Countess of Lincoln who was abducted and imprisoned twice in her lifetime.A popular novelist in her day, publishing under the names Mrs. West and Prudentia Homespun, and the author of 'conduct literature', poetry and educational tracts, West's writing was notably conservative and didactic. Her work 'Letters to a Young Lady', was viewed as the ideological counterpart to the writing of Mary Wollstoncraft. The author's preface remarks upon the moral lessons she hopes her readers will glean from the work: 'a precautionary hint is given to thoughtless beauty, to concern her from considering domestic happiness as a toy, which she may toss away and regain at pleasure'.With the armorial bookplate of 'HC' to the front pastedown of each volume.West is best known today as the author of a novel that served as inspiration for Jane Austen's 'Sense and Sensibility'. Her novel 'A Gossip's Story', published in 1796, features two sisters, one rational and sensible, and the other of a romantic, emotive sensibility.
