It is a bitter account of the sufferings of Protestants under the Catholic Church, look at the history of martyrdom within Protestantism. It was a highly influential work upon its publication, going through many editions whilst the author was still alive. John Foxe was a historian, specialising in martyrs. He became a Protestant in 1545, at a time when the religion was condemned under Henry VIII. When Queen Mary came to the throne, Foxe quickly went into exile due to religious persecution, not returning to England until the death of Mary. 'Martyr's' was Foxe's life work, having started it in 1552, publishing an early edition in Latin whilst he was in exile, not publishing it in English until Elizabeth I was on the throne. The work ran through four editions during Foxe's lifetime. Expanded with notes and commentaries by John Milner, the pseudonym of Francis William Blagdon. Blagdon used the pseudonym of J. Milner as there was a Catholic priest during this time with the same name. Blagdon was a journalist, beginning his career as a newsboy for 'The Sun', before going on to edit the 'Morning Post'. He also published 'A Brief History of Ancient and Modern India', 'French Interpreter', and 'Modern Discoveries'. Collated, with fourteen plates. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper, 'Mary Bickarddon 1822'. CONDITION In the original half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, smart. Minor shelfwear to the cloth. A very little discolouration to the spine, with just a little bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Minor fading to the rear board. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some spotting, and a little offsetting to some pages due to the plates. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front endpaper, 'Mary Bickarddon 1822'.
