In it the author treats with saving faith, the means of its acquisition, and the need for gospel preachers.Eliphalet Pearson (1752-1826), graduate of the Harvard Class of 1773, the second Hancock Professor in Hebrew and Oriental Languages at Harvard College, and acting President from 1804 to 1806. A dispute over the appointment of the Unitarian minister Henry Ware as Hollis Professor caused Pearson to resign his post at Harvard, and to briefly serve as Professor of Sacred Literature at Andover. Pearson then devoted the rest of his life to the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, a society he had joined in 1803, when it was called The American Society for Educating Pious Youth for the Gospel Ministry.
