We came here for provisions - have patronized the people as usual (except a certain class such as wealthy &c) the place is not near so gay & lively as when we were here before - McKinley & the Doctor have received their commissions - you I presume will have seen the list - nothing new strange, or unaccountable; I hope you will bear a hand & get back and I intend to get leave of absence - or a sick ticket & travel north - Ee'n this I presume you have nail'd a mrs. or Freeman's. if you have I will not insist on your returning - can you not continue to lend us half a dozen midshipmen we are short. Cuthbert is under arrest on charges for striking the sailmaker - I have brought the charges. Five in number - unofficerlike conduct - cruelty & oppression - Disobedience of orders - Neglect of Duty - and Disrespect to me -- Everything goes in the old style - Pill has not been near a w-h house since we have been here neither have I. Old Wayne has left off drinking Jack and only takes a little wine. McCluney & the Long Sal gets on pretty fairly. The girls in St Mary's we left all well and in most magnificent order - if you hear of or see Sproston I wish you would let him know where I am - remember to any of my friends you may see in New York - tell your old messmates [illegible] their remembrance & none more than you - sincerely friend Babbit."
