Description: Presented is a fabulous quality French silver chamberstick, with snuffer. This piece dates to about 1819-1822, and was made by N. X. Goulin (sometimes spelled Goulain). The chamberstick is made from French first standard silver, which has a purity of 950/1000. It's worth noting that this is a higher standard than sterling, which is 925/1000. The chamberstick is very attractive and well made, with a decorative reeded design around the rim, on the handle, and around the bottom of the socle. The wax drip or bobeche is removable for ease of cleaning. The bobeche has a ball and dart decorated edge. The thumbpiece is done in a fancy shell form. Even the snuffer is decorated, with a scrolled flower form handle. The wax drip is finely engraved with a crest of a mermaid, with a comb in one hand and a mirror in the other. This is an absolutely fantastic chamber candlestick, with all its pieces intact. The chamberstick is stamped on the upper side with the French first standard silver hallmark of Michelangelo's profile in an octagonal punch, guaranteeing 950 purity silver. The underside of the chamberstick is stamped with the maker's mark for N. X. Goulin. The side of the socle is stamped with the tax mark. All three of these marks are repeated on the side of the bobeche/wax drip. The snuffer is stamped with the French first standard silver hallmark of Michelangelo's profile in an octagonal punch, guaranteeing 950 purity silver, the maker's mark for Goulin, and the 'medium article' tax mark. All three pieces have matching hallmarks, and are clearly 100% original. This piece is in great condition. The chamberstick has only been very lightly hand cleaned. There are no splits, no breaks, no chips, no dents, no cracks, no monograms, no monogram removals, and no repairs. The chamberstick measures about 5 inches from handle to side and stands about 2 1/8 inches tall, not including the height of the snuffer when it's on its stand. The chamberstick weighs 243 grams or 8.6 regular ounces. -jm Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
