1820-40 Antique Steel Candle Holder, / HOGSCRAPER, Civil War, Antebellum, GIFT

Description: NICE, EARLY HANDMADE ADJUSTABLE ANTIQUE CANDLE HOLDER/ HOGSCRAPER, c.1820-1840 DESCRIPTION: Scans show it all.....RARE, early antique candle holder from my collection. Hand made by an early tinsmith. Tab in the slot is there to move the candle, that would lift candle up about 2 1/2". However, this was used a lot and residual wax, both in the candle rest and blocking the slider from moving. Could be cleaned by heating/removing wax to either use or free up slider. Measures about 3 3/4" diameter at the base x 4" tall. THIS IS COMPLETE, INCLUDING THE HANGER TAB ON THE TOP RING, WHICH IS OFTEN MISSING OR BROKEN OFF!!! This is a classic antique colonial hogscraper design. Leave it to a New England Yankee to get 2 functions out of a single tool!!! Besides lighting, this was commonly used to help remove hair from pigs, by holding the shaft and using the sharp edge of the top ring as a scraper. A CLASSIC LOOK AND A GREAT EARLY DECORATOR. A GREAT PIECE OF PRIMITIVE AMERICANA, a great decorator, and can still be used as a candle holder!! IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND ONE LIKE THIS TODAY. This can be used as a functional item or as a nice original early antique decorative item, displayed on an early desk or on an early kitchen or dining room shelf, especially nice if you can find an early tallow candle to go with it. In good condition, with little wear and nice patina. This was part of a very early antique lighting collection, originally from a local New England estate. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS!!!
