Written by William Hazlitt (1778-1830), an English essayist, artist, art and literary critic and social commentator highly regarded as being on the greatest critics and essayists in the English language alongside the likes of Samuel Johnson.A first edition of this work, with volume I released in 1821 and the second volume following a year later.Complete in two volumes.With four pages of publisher's advertisements to the front of volume I. CONDITION In the original paper covered boards. Externally rather worn, particularly to the first volume, which has loss to the spine and boards; front board is loose and rear board is strained. Both volumes are bumped to the extremities and wear to the spine. Ownership inscription to the title page of volume II. Internally, binding is tender; volume I has ten loose leaves at the start, including the title page. Pages are generally bright and clean with just the odd spot. Overall Condition: Fair GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.
