Some are made by the spirits of departed persons, such as Longinus, Aeschylus, Moliere, Milton, Pope, Voltaire, Garrick, Johnson and so on; others by a Stratford butcher, a shepherd, an architect, a builder, a Danish merchant, a Venetian gentleman, a Newcastle schoolmaster, "Samuel Grim, plug-turner of the pipes which supply the theatre with gas," "Lancelot Blood," student in anatomy, and so on."
