Volume I is A-K with volume II L-Z. This work became a standard text on painters, later known as Pilkington's Dictionary. The two volumes discuss the most influential and eminent of painters from 'its revival by Cimabue in the year 1250 to the present time'. Matthew Pilkington's dictionary was his major work and was widely published through many editions. CONDITION In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spines and board edges. Externally, very smart with minor shelfwear to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. A small amount of light rubbing to the boards. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spots to the first and last few pages and the odd spot throughout.
