Description: Two rare 189 year-old Bound Volumes of Blackwood's Magazine complete (12 monthly issues) for the year 1834. Bound in black cloth with gilt-stamping. More than 1800 pages. Thick volumes and heavy. Both in very good condition with no foxing to text. First volume has a little soil to the margins of the title-page, otherwise these are bright, clean volumes. Both volumes published in London. These are NOT old Library volumes. See photos. Some highlights I find include: John Wilson's extended essay following the publication of William Sotheby's translation of Homer's "The Odyssey" (in 2 issues). James Hamilton Browne's 27-page "Voyage from Leghorn to Cephalonia with Lord Byron, and a Narrative of a Visit, in 1823, to the Seat of the War in Greece." Here first printed (in two issues). Browne met-up with Lord Byron, Edward John Trelawny, and others in his train in Italy and this is a first-rate narrative beginning with their sailing voyage on board the 120-ton English Brig "Hercules" from Leghorn in Italy to the Greek Ionian Isles. There's a good deal of direct quotation here from Byron and great detail on their adventures en route and on various Ionian Isles. Much here on Byron's person and companions, his reading, recreations, fits and friendships, generosity, the continuing composition of "Don Juan," his reflections upon numerous authors and books, his support of the Greek cause in the war, his admiration for Sir Walter Scott and his friend Percy Shelley, etc. For Byron fans, I'm also including here a long essay in a complete issue of the New York Review of Books for 10 June 1993 by Anne Barton called "Byron Lives!" This following the publication of new works by and about the Romantic poet. ALSO, a complete copy of the London Times Literary Supplement for 4 October 2013 which features an essay by Emily A. Bernard Jackson called "Hector on Horseback" in review of Roderick Beaton's "Byron's [Greek] War." See photos #6, #7. #8, & #9. Other contributions in the Blackwood's volumes include: Parts 4-6 (in three issues) of Thomas De Quincey's extended and detailed historical narrative of "The Caesars." John Wilson on Edmund Spenser's "The Faery Queen." Parts 2-4. In three issues. John Wilson on the "Poetical Works" of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. 28 pages. Parts 7-11 of George Croly's "Edmund Burke." In five issues. Mrs. S.A.C. Younghusband's notable essay "Reminiscences of Napoleon Bonaparte at St. Helena." She was there and this an an item of some interest on the person and character of Napoleon at this date. John Wilson on the "Hindu Drama" (Part II). This on "The Mrichchakati, or The Toy-Cart." Archibald Alison on "The Fall of Earl Grey." John Croly on "The Irish Union" (#2 & #3). In two issues. Also, Croly offers an essay on "Mirabeau." In two parts. Novelist Michael Scott's "The Cruise of the Midge." In 10 monthly parts (first 10 chapters). One of the energetic Irishman William Maginn's most notable works, "A story without a Tail." Arnout O'Donnel's essay in review of the "Memoirs of Monsieur de Chateaubriand." In four parts. William Maginn's "Bob Burke's Duel with Ensign Brady of the 48th." George Croly's "The Conde de Ildefonzo: A Tale of the Spanish Revolution." In two parts, complete. John Wilson pens an essay on the "Angling" of "Stephen Oliver" and another on the poetry of Ebenezer Elliott. John Wilson, J.G. Lockhart, James Hogg and William Maginn offer their famous "Noctes Ambrosianae" (#65 to #69). In five issues. There were a total of 71 "Noctes" published, ending in February 1835. J.H. Merivale on "The Church and Its Enemies." John Wilson on "Mrs Siddons." Complete in two parts. Archibald Alison and Arnaut O'Donnel's "Results of the Triumph of the Barricades." J.G. Lockhart on the passing of publisher and editor William Blackwood. A group of new poems by Felicia Hemans. Numerous other essays and articles, poems, etc. Four items in total. Author identifications above are from the Wellesley Index (I, 45-47).
