Description: EARLY RAILROAD SHEET MUSIC (1834), BOSTON & WORCESTER RAILWAY TO WESTBOROUGH, LITHOGRAPHED BY J. H. BUFFORDRANGERS’ TRIP TO WESTBOROUGH OR LION QUICK STEP. Respectfully Dedicated to Capt. Chas. C. Paine, and the Officers and Members of the Rifle Rangers, Boston. Performed for the first time on their visit to the Lyon Farm by the Brigade Band at the opening of the Rail Road to Westborough, November 15th, 1834. Composed by James Hooton. Boston: Published for the Author by C. Bradlee. J. H. Bufford, Delt. Pendleton’s Lithogy. First edition; lithographed sheet music with pictorial cover art with an early depiction of the railroad [Thomson, Check List of Publications on American Railroads before 1841, No. 228; Levy Sheet Music Collection, Box 083, Item 114]. Original sheet music (c. 13 x 10 inches), lithographed, pp. [i(cover)], [1]-2, [4(rear cover blank)]; sheet music without lyrics. The finely lithographed cover art shows a giant lion looming over the Rifle Rangers who are in formation. Behind them can be seen 5 railway boxcars on the tracks. This is a very early depiction of the American railroad– with the 1828 Rail Road March likely being one of the earliest [see Thomson 228]. Spine notched (where removed from bound volume), very good condition, with light wear, foxing, soiling. A rare piece of sheet music with an early depiction of the American railroad; a very fine lithograph by J. H. Bufford. We have been selling on eBay for more than 2 decades.
