The letter requests approval of the soldier's retirement due to his health condition. The text of the document translates as: The above named has the honor of explaining to you that having served approximately 31 years and 6 months in your direction and having approximately 8 years of military or royal navy service, he is unable to continue in any service having sight extremely weakened and recused to the army of Egypt serving in the 9th Regiment of the Ligne. He therefore asks you to accept the request he has the honor to make to you for his admission to retirement, unable to continue any service because of the suffering he is experiencing. With honor and the deepest respect.It is in excellent condition with age appropriate wear and patina with the exception of a tear in the upper right corner of the first page. The document is written on a large sheet of paper which is folded in half to make 4 pages. Each page measures 9 1/4" x 7 1/8".
