Description: [HERMAN MELVILLE, MELVILLIANA, ALBANY NEW YORK, LITERARY PERIODICALS] PERRY, (E)rastus (Publisher) "THE ZODIAC, A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Science, Literature, and the Arts..." Albany. From the Steam Press of Packard and Van Benthuysen. 1835-37. Quarto. (9.25 in x 11.875 in) First Issue. This bound volume collects Volume 1 #1-10 & Volume 2 #1-7. A total of 17 consecutive issues between July 1835 - January 1837. Bound in 3/4 sheep over marbled boards. Hinges sound and strong. Occasional light scattered spotting in limited places. Generally quite clean. Old gift inscription from 'John' (Visscher; 1805 - 1844) to his sister 'Cecelia' (Visscher; 1815 - 1848) of Albany, New York on the FFEP. Overall, very good or better. AN EXTRAORDINARILY RARE COMPLETE RUN OF 'ZODIAC' IN A BOUND VOLUME. Melville collectors are already aware of the scarcity of this set and as recently as 1980, Melville scholar Don Ritter published a reprint so collectors could own an example of the works by Simeon Bloodgood (a cousin of Melville) and others which meaningfully influenced Melville's writing. As of this writing, 4 institutions hold copies of this rare work. This is the ONLY copy of a run like this to be offered in commerce in at least 30 years and we could not trace a run this long and complete to ever be offered for sale. It was appearing at auction and in dealer catalogs as early as 1911. Should this copy not find an adequate home here via this venue, we may elect to send it elsewhere where it might be more ably appreciated for what it is. A truly rare and important piece of literary Americana. Please email any questions -
