Description: I have here for sale a TWO VOLUME SET of books entitled THE ADVENTURES OF GIL BLAS OF SANTILLANE Translated from the French of LE SAGE by T Smollett and Illustrated by Jean Gigoux VOLS I & II published by J J Dubochet & Co.; Charles Tilt; and H Hooper, London, in 1836. Alain-Rene Lesage (1668-1747), older spelling Le Sage, was a French novelist and playwright best known for his comic novel "The Devil Upon Two Sticks"; his comedy "Turcaret"; and his picaresque novel "Gil Blas" written between 1715 and 1735. Volume I includes books I-VI, and Volume II includes Books VII to XII. This edition contains a full-page b/w illustration on the frontispieces, and numerous in-text b/w illustrations throughout.Mid blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on the spines. Minor mark at the bottom of the spines. Name of previous owner on the half title page of volume one. Light foxing to pages. All pages are firm and the books are in very good condition. Vol I: 486 pages.
