Volume Title Page and Contents. Galed was the first Jewish periodical published in England. Morris J. Raphall (1798-1868), born in Stockholm, had settled in England in 1825. In 1849 he went to the U.S. to serve as rabbi of the B'nai Jeshurun Synagogue in New York. He became notorious for his defense of slavery when 1861 he delivered a sermon on Bible and slavery, insisting that biblical law granted the right to own slaves. CONDITION: The Contents are complete but the Title Page, Table of Contents and the first 2 pages of Issue 53 are bound-in facsimile copies of the missing originals. Good+.
