1836 paper: BARCELONA; cave SALAMANDER; LABRADOR Moravians; Glasgow

Description: THE PENNY MAGAZINE April 16, 1836 Barcelona Proteus anguinus (salamander) Labrador This is a paper which is over 180 years old. It is printed in a small format, measuring 7 by 11 in size, and is 8 pages long. The issue came from a bound volume and has typical minor disbinding marks at the spine, plus some light age browning, but is still in attractive, very good condition. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The lead article is on BARCELONA, which is illustrated with an attractive 4x6-inch front-page woodcut on Port and City of Barcelona. The text of the story takes up the rest of the page and almost all of the next page. This text says, in part: . . . in 1830, nine years after the yellow fever had ravaged the town, the population had increased to 160,000 inhabitants. When Spain shall be more peaceful and industrious, and when the Levant becomes a more active scene of commerce, the intercourse of Barcelona with Turkey, with Greece, and Egypt, and the eastern shores of the Mediterranean generally, cannot fail to increase. This result will be the consequence both of the geographical position of Barcelona, and of the character of the Catalonians. . . . The Catalonians are proud, haughty, violent in their passions, rude in discourse and in action, turbulent, intractable, and passionately fond of independence . . . . they are sailors, husbandmen, and builders, and run to all corners of the world to seek their fortunes. They are brave, intrepid, sometimes rash . . . . Barcelona stands on a gentle eminence, between two rivers, and open to the sea on the east, north-east, and south-east. . . . The environs of Barcelona are highly beautiful. . . . there is no city in Europe of an equal size which possesses so many country-houses in its neighbourhood. . . . In a fine day, the eye may wander with delight over this agreeably-varied landscape. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The last page and 3/4ths is on THE PROTEUS ANGUINUS, which is a blind amphibian known as the Olm, found in the caves of southern Europe, and which is sometimes called the "cave salamander." The text is mainly an account by the late Sir Humphry Davy about his encountering the Proteus Anguinus during a visit to Illyria, a land on the Balkan Peninsula. It is illustrated with a 3x6-inch woodcut of the creature. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The paper has almost a full page on EXTRAORDINARY NARRATIVE OF THE ESCAPE OF SOME MISSIONARIES ON THE COAST OF LABRADOR. This is an account of Moravian missionaries who had a harrowing experience when stranded amid some ice flows in 1782 when attempting a trip between Nain and Okkak in Labrador. There is also a short item on THE CLELAND TESTIMONIAL, a new building constructed on Buchanan Street, Glasgow, as a memorial to Dr. Cleland of that city. It is illustrated with a 3x5-inch woodcut. ********************** Background on this publication: The Penny Magazine was a weekly 8-page paper put out by Londons Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. Throughout the 1830s, an American edition was very popular in the United States, only to dwindle into extinction during the following decade. The paper did not cover the current news of the day, and carried no advertising. Instead, the Penny Magazine provided excellent essays on a wide array of subjects, such as architecture, science, geography and natural history. The paper was compact in size, and every issue was illustrated with several fine woodcut engravings. 259 [gsp10226] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
