Description: Fully titled, Evidence of the Authenticity, Inspiration, and Canonical Authority of the Holy Scriptures. Authored by Rev. Archibald Alexander. First published in 1836, this is a later edition, date of publication unknown. Postings on Worldcat note early printings with dates given between 1836 and 1840, with some 1836 printings being 6th or higher printings. There was not any Worldcat listing of a First Edition; one listing I saw online characterizing it as a "First Edition" did have copyright information behind the title page noting a date of entry of 1836. This version does not have any copyright information behind the title and the "Advertisement" (shown in listing photos) notes this to be a later edition as it starts, "This edition of the Evidences has been enlarged..". Overall in VERY GOOD CONDITION, with moderate to heavy corner and edge wear, clear gilt titling and decoration front board and spine, embossed border decoration on the front and rear boards, plain white endpapers, a tissue-protected portrait of the author, 308 clean and solidly bound pages with no illustrations, light foxing throughout. There is a handwritten presentation note on first free endpaper, shown in listing photo, which presents this book to an individual whose name is indistinct, but it is presented on the "Tenth Anniversary of her marriage by her friend and Pastor, M. A. Parkinson" and dated Nov 20, 1865. In my search of the internet, I did find an M.A. Parkinson on a page produced by the Jefferson County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society describing churches including the Bloomingdale United Presbyterian Church. The last listing photo shows the historical description of the ministry in that church, including an M.A. Parkinson who was a Minister in 1866 and a Pastor in 1869. So a bit of antique provenance for this book! Here is an overview of the book found online: " 'Evidences of the Authenticity, Inspiration, and Canonical Authority of the Holy Scriptures' by Archibald Alexander is an expansive and meticulously argued work that defends the divine nature of the Bible. This book is essential for anyone exploring the foundational truths of Christianity or seeking to deepen their understanding of the Bible's divine inspiration. Structured across twenty-three chapters, Alexander’s text methodically addresses the logical, historical, and prophetic evidences supporting the Scriptures. He begins by establishing the legitimate role of reason in religion, arguing against the notion that faith and intellectual inquiry are incompatible. He then moves to defend the necessity and desirability of religion in general, and Christianity in particular, as the only faith that satisfactorily answers the profound existential questions of human existence. The core of the book explores the credibility of biblical miracles, the historical accuracy of biblical prophecy, and the remarkable fulfillment of these prophecies, ranging from the detailed predictions concerning the Jewish nation to the foretold fates of ancient cities like Nineveh, Babylon, and Tyre. Alexander compellingly argues for Christianity’s unique historical and prophetic record, setting it apart from all other religions." B41
