This document is signed on the reverse by attorney Peter Cagger. Peter Cagger (1814-1868) was a notable lawyer and businessman. Cagger was also involved in politics; he was a major force in New York's Democratic party during the mid 1800s, along with Dean Richmond and August Belmont. Cagger was a Director of the National Commercial Bank, and a Trustee of the Atlantic Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1865, Cagger purchased land at the corner of Broadway and North Ferry Street for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, which they used as the St. Vincent's Orphan Asylum. Upon his death, his widow donated $15,000 to convert the building into a hospital, which was named St. Peter's Hospital in his honor. Peter Cagger died as the result of a carriage accident while riding in Central Park. This document is concerned with a case from Albany County. The case involved men named John A. Manning, Philip V. Hoffman, Edgar F. Peck, Wyman R . Barrett, Daniel Barber, Daniel Lee, and Oliver Lee, plus a witness named Levi Ridgley. This document is partly printed and partly handwritten. It is also signed by a court clerk named H. B. Haswell. This man was Henry Burhans Haswell (1803-1869). Haswell was born in Kingston, New York, the son of John Haswell and Margaret Burhans Haswell. Henry B. Haswell married Elizabeth Trowbridge (1809-1882). Haswell was an attorney who served as Albany county clerk for six years. He also served as an alderman, a school commissioner and as secretary to the board of education for over 25 years. Haswell was private secretary to William H. Seward when Seward served in Abraham Lincoln's cabinet as Secretary of State. The list of jurors includes such names as Alexander Borthwick, Enoch Mabey, and John Soop. The judge in this case was John P. Cushman (1784-1848), who also served in Congress as a member of the Federalist Party. The document is about 13" by 8". It is in good condition, with creases where it has been folded, light browning, and some general wear. Shipping is FREE within the USA. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
