Description: I have here for sale a rare book entitled AMERICAN NOTES for General Circulation by Charles Dickens, Vol I. It is a fourth edition published by Chapman and Hall, London in 1842, the same year as the first edition. This Vol I covers the passage out, Boston, the American railroad system, Worcester, Connecticut, Hartford, New Haven, New York, Philadelphia and Washington. This was published very early in the career of Charles Dickens and made his name as a philanthropist - I only have Volume I for sale here. On 22 January 1842, Dickens and his wife arrived in Boston, Massachusetts aboard the RMS Britannia during their first trip to the United States and Canada. He described his impressions in this travelogue.In Notes, Dickens includes a powerful condemnation of slavery which he had attacked as early as The Pickwick Papers, correlating the emancipation of the poor in England with the abolition of slavery abroad citing newspaper accounts of runaway slaves disfigured by their masters. Of course this may not be included in this volume as it only covers Northern states.Half calf leather on marbled hardboards. 5 gilt raised bands, dark maroon leather title and author blocks with gilt lettering. Small tear to top of spine and some wear to marbled paper to top edges. Corners a little rubbed.
