Description: Free Domestic Shipping. This is an original letter that was folded after being written (it is the real deal--NOT a reproduction) and was then mailed through the United States Postal Service. You are purchasing both the postal portion and the letter. ONE of the reasons it is collectible is because of the fact that the local postmaster applied postal markings considered appropriate for the letter's journey. In addition to being collectable becasue of the content of the letter, or the writer, or the addressee, it is a collectable item of postal history because of the rates, markings and usage. Red 1843 "COXACKIE N.Y." circular datestamp on a one page letter written by Anthony Van Bergen accepting the appointment by the State of New York Democratic Convention to be a delegate at the May 1844 Democratic Presidential Convention to be held in Baltimore. The letter is addressed to "Hon. Richard D. Davis, M. C., Poughkeepsie, N. Y." It travelled with a "FREE" as it was sent to a Member of Congress. From the Congressional Biography: DAVIS, Richard David, a Representative from New York; born at Stillwater, Saratoga County, N.Y., in 1799; was graduated from Yale College in 1818; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1821 and commenced practice in Poughkeepsie; elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth Congresses (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1845); chairman, Committee on Revolutionary Claims (Twenty-eighth Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1844; withdrew from political and professional life; engaged in agricultural pursuits in Waterford, Saratoga County, N.Y., where he died on June 17, 1871; interment in Waterford Rural Cemetery. Super nice item. All pages of the letter photographed here, but content is copyright reserved for the buyer and may not be reproduced by any means except for and by the purchaser of this item.
