Description: RAREST Type 1849 California $5 Gold Counter Our piece here is THE KING of 1849 California $5 gold gaming piece. This one has some original gilt left, measures 22mm and has reeded edge. Fauver lists this one as R-9 (2-4 known) and prices it at $70 for VF in 1991 (I am sure a few more specimens have popped up since 1991). Fuld/Rulau lists a plain brass piece as Cal-3 (Kurth 3B) as R-7 in 1972. At that time the gilt piece was unknown to them. I've added a photo of Fauver plate coin, along with his rarity and price from his 1991 catalog for your info. There are three types of 1849 California $5 gold counters: Type I (very common), Type II (scarce), Type III (rare). Three pieces complete this series. Here is your chance to get that rarest type. Its condition is pleasant, as you can see from the photos. Note the elongated chin like that of Jay Leno. That's the key. For a very rare 'thick flan' variety of this issue, see my other listing. The last photo is from Rulau/Fuld catalog.
