Description: Hard to find complete 47-page issue of the Boston weekly Living Age for 24 February 1849 is in good condition, here neatly rescued from an old damaged bound volume of the magazine. Very nice clean text. See photo #2 for index of contents. Highlights include: English journalist and novelist Frederick Hardiman opens this issue with a 10-page essay in review of German explorer Ferdinand Werne's new volume, recently published in Berlin: Expedition to Discover the Sources of the White Nile, 1840-41 (Expedition zur Entdeckung der Quellen des Weissen Nil 1840-41). Hardiman is identified as the author of the essay in the Wellesley Index, Vol. 1, p. 85. A new poem by Anne Bronte (signed here "Acton Bell") called The Narrow Way. This would seem to be her first and only appearance in an American periodical during her lifetime. It appears here just three months before her early death at age 29. The poem had appeared in several English periodicals late in 1848. Thomas Babington Macaulay's essay on the "Character of Halifax." This lifted from his History of England. Numerous other essays, articles and reports including notice of the death of English politician Charles Buller; on the "Late David Hale" (journalist and Associated Press founder); an essay reprinted from the London Times on the evils of "American Slavery,"; a review of "Nineveh and its Remains" (Layard's discoveries), etc.
