Description: This listing is for a strand of Akoya cultured pearls. Akoya are the traditional, normal sized, saltwater cultured pearls; which are much more expensive than freshwater cultured pearls and typically have better, finer luster. In my pearl courses, I was taught that almost all cultured pearls are bleached and dyed to some extent, and processors closely guard these treatments as proprietary trade secrets. Therefore, we are listing these cultured pearls as being treated by bleaching and dying; but these are NOT blatantly dyed; only treated by traditional, time-honored, regular processing. Akoya cultured pearls are not well understood, sometimes even by jewelers. Looking at eBay listings, obviously they are not understood by many sellers here also, since I see dozens of obviously freshwater pearls listed as Akoya! Caveat emptor! To create Akoya cultured pearls, the mollusks are farmed, and the pearls are cultured by placing a shell bead along with some mollusk mantle tissue into the mollusk. Size and quality are factors that determine a cultured pearl's value. Quality factors include roundness (spherical to baroque in shape), color (color preferences sometimes vary in different countries), luster (how reflective the surface is), the amount of surface blemishes present (called "spotting"), nacre thickness (this is the layer deposited on the bead by the mollusk), and the "make" of the strand (how centered the holes are drilled, how well the strand is knotted, etc.). The last image is for a quick cultured pearl quality guide (note that we disagree with the yellow color they call "cream") which is NOT included with this strand. Pearl strand lengths have historically been referred to as Choker (under 17 inches), Princess (17 to under 20 inches), Matinee (20 to under 26 inches), Opera (26 to 36 inches), and Rope (over 36 inches). This strand falls in the "Princess" length category. This particular strand consists of 72 Akoya cultured pearls, 5.5 - 6 mm in diameter, finished to 18.5 inches in length. The strand is knotted in between pearls on an unknown type of bead cord and is held with a 14 karat yellow gold diamond accented clasp. Each side of the clasp features a round full brilliant cut natural mélange diamond. The diamonds have a combined weight estimated at 0.01 carat and have an average color graded at I/J and clarity at SI-2 with good overall cut. These cultured pearls are mostly round, are white to light cream color with light rose' and light greenish overtones, and have medium luster. The surface is lightly to moderately spotted with minor surface imperfections, the pearls have thin to medium nacre thickness, and the strand is of good overall make. Some pearls also exhibit some "blinking"; that is caused by seeing some transparency within the bead below the nacre layer. This strand was priced at $1,295 in our brick and mortar fine jewelry store that closed in 2020.
