Description: Undetermined cancel to Boston, Mass. Addressed: William Dwight Esq. Treasr / Boston / Mass. On the back of the letter is docketed: "J. Bardwell & Co. / Nov 24 56". This may refer to Joel Bardwell (1823-1908) of Shelburne, MA. Empty folded letters from this time often contained bank notes or checks that were due. William Dwight (1831-1888) was admitted to West Point in 1849, however he resigned from school in 1853, and moved to Boston to work in manufacturing at the time of this letter. At the beginning of the Civil War he was commissioned a captain in 1861. In 1862 he was wounded and captured at the Battle of Williamsburg, and later returned to the army following a prisoner exchange. He was promoted to brigadier general and fought in both the Western and Eastern Theaters of the war. Please see my other covers of the 1851-1861 3c Washington being offered now.
