Description: A letter to Reginald Craufurd of Craufurdland. Dated 1851. Sent by George Moore from Ancona to Rome. Reginald Craufurd, from the historic estate of Craufurdland, near Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland is almost certainly on the Grand Tour, and staying in Rome at this time. It is likely that George Moore was also on the tour and staying in another part of Italy, writing this correspondence to his friend. The Grand Tour was an essential rite of passage for the elite aristocrats of Britain, with Italy being a key destination This letter predates envelopes and stamps and is merely folded paper sealed with wax. It's a very chatty correspondence, mentioning a fire at 'father's house' and a woman servant flinging herself from the 4th floor and landing in a tree !There is also mention of what I think is 'bandits' in the area, and General Nugent with the Bohemian Regiment on their way to Naples. (Nugent was apparently an Irish soldier who fought with the Austrians and Sicilians). The letter is in good condition and a rare survivor. Letters from the Grand Tour era are rare and sought after. More than 20 years ago a collection of about 90 older grand tour letters sold at auction in Edinburgh for more than £17000. (F13)
